YOUR VISIT TO FOOTHILLS

When a child and their caregiver visit Foothills Children’s Advocacy Center, they can expect a supportive and caring experience tailored to their needs.

A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT
The staff at Foothills Children’s Advocacy Center warmly welcomes children and their caregivers into our child-friendly space. A comfortable waiting area offers snacks and water to help ease stress and create a calming atmosphere.
FAMILY ADVOCACY
While the child participates in the forensic interview, a Family Advocate meets with the caregiver to discuss their experiences and identify specific ways to support both the child and family. The Advocate provides information about the potential impact of trauma on children, along with resources and referrals to counseling or community services that can aid in the child’s healing and strengthen the family.
FORENSIC INTERVIEW
A specially trained Forensic Interviewer talks with the child, providing an opportunity for them to share their experience. These interviews take place in a thoughtfully designed room featuring comfortable seating, warm lighting, and engaging items like fidgets, markers, and drawing paper. Interviews are recorded to ensure accuracy and reduce the need for multiple interviews. Two cameras in the room connect to a separate space where investigative partners observe the interview. The Forensic Interviewer prioritizes the child’s well-being throughout the process.
CHILD-CENTERED MEDICAL EXAM

Medical services are provided in partnership with UVA at one of four sites; the clinic at Foothills, SAFE clinic at the Battle building, the Teen and Young Adult Health Center and UVA Emergency Department. A specially trained provider performs a child-focused examination with the goal of assessing the child’s overall health, educating them about  their body in an age-appropriate way, and providing reassurance. The exam is thorough, including a head-to-toe check, and may involve additional steps such as lab tests, imaging (e.g., X-rays), or forensic photography. The team prioritizes the child’s comfort and privacy, explaining every step of the exam in advance. The staff is available to address any questions or concerns.

TEAM COLLABORATION
Law enforcement and child protective services observe the forensic interview to gather information, minimizing the need for additional interviews with the child. After the interview and medical exam, investigators meet with the caregiver to address questions and provide clarity on next steps.
ONGOING SUPPORT

The Family Advocate maintains regular communication with the family, offering continued support and addressing their needs throughout the healing process.

Foothills is committed to supporting the child and caregiver with care and compassion. Our team is always ready to answer any questions you may have.
